Dr Murali Dharan Bashyam
Head, Lab of molecular oncology

Education
M. Biotechnology, AIIMS, New Delhi.
Ph.D. Biochemistry, University of Delhi, New Delhi.
Dr Murali Dharan Bashyam received his Ph.D. Degree in Biochemistry in 1996 from the University of Delhi under the supervision of Professor Anil K. Tyagi, a pioneer researcher in the field of tuberculosis. For his thesis, Dr Bashyam worked on the characterisation of transcriptional signals from mycobacteria. After receiving Ph.D, he joined the Eukaryotic Gene Expression laboratory in NII, New Delhi led by Dr. Seyed E. Hasnain, an eminent Scientist. During his two years at NII working on regulation of the Baculovirus polyhedrin gene promoter, he developed a keen interest in eukaryotic gene expression and genomics. In November 1999, Dr Bashyam joined CDFD as a staff scientist and Head, Laboratory of Molecular Oncology. He was an International Visiting Scientist at The Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, USA, 2013; International Visiting Fellow at National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, USA, 2009 and Visiting International Investigator at Department of Pathology, Stanford University School of Medicine, 2003-2004.

Dr Bashyam is an elected member of Association of UICC (international union against cancer) Fellows (AUF), the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) and American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). He is a Life member of Indian Association for Cancer research, National Science Congress, India, the Society of Biological Chemists, India and the Association of Microbiologists of India. He is also a member of Scientific Advisory Committee of ILS, Bhubanewsar as well as of the Cancer Institute (WIA), Chennai.

He has been the recipient of many prestigious national and international awards including National Bioscience award for career development from the Department of Biotechnology, 2013; Faculty from developing countries’ award from American Association for Cancer Research, USA, 2010; Fogarty International Research Collaboration Award, Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, USA, 2008; American association for cancer research, National cancer institute (AACR-NCI) International investigator opportunity grant, 2008 and the Young scientist medal from the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), 1998.

Landscape of gene fusions in early onset sporadic rectal cancer

Currently at CDFD, his lab is interested in understanding the biological origins of cancers prevalent in India using approaches including but not limited to genomics, molecular genetics, cell biology and molecular pathology. His lab is also working on molecular analysis of disease causing mutations in several genetic disorders to understand various post/co-transcriptional mechanisms such as splicing and nonsense-mediated decay.
