DBT Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Microbial Biology

Research activities in the Laboratory of Bacterial Genetics are aimed towards understanding different physiological processes in the model bacterium Escherichia coli with the aid of genetic and molecular approaches. Three broad areas of microbial physiology are under study, namely water-stress adaptation, mechanisms of spontaneous mutagenesis, and interplays between replication-transcription-translation. The laboratory's motto may be phrased as:

The Research Projects in Progress
1 Transcriptional regulation of the proU operon
2 K+ transport mediated by the Kdp transporter and its regulation
3 A novel component of biological water stress - anhydrotic stress
4 Spontaneous mutations in nondividing cells
5 Transposon precise excisions and physiological function of uup gene
6 SOS induction in uvrD mutants
7 Regulation of plasmid copy number
